No Foul Play in RV Storage Facility Fire
A news release today, which was reported on TV News and various news websites, announced preliminary findings on the fire at the Florida West Storage facility. An investigation, involving the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the State Fire Marshal, reported that last week’s fire, which destroyed our motorhome along with 31 other RV’s, nine boats, 2 classic cars and a ‘retired’ military vehicle, was not suspicious in nature. Rumors of “a person seen on video” and “someone must have wanted to get out of payments” were just that….rumors. A final report is to be released in July, perhaps we might learn more from this report. The news release said that another 30 RV’s were also damaged from the extreme heat of the fire. Total damage from the fire is estimated at $4 to $5 million dollars.

I assume they will release their findings on the cause of the fire. I don't see how that storage company could not be responsible if it was faulty wiring or something. What in the world could make a metal storage building burn down. What a shame for you and everyone who trusted that their possessions would be better off in storage. Really makes one think.
ReplyDeleteWhen you sign your contact for this storage facility, as with most around here, even those which are for storing furniture, etc., it clearly states that you need to have your own insurance. I do agree that if it can be proven that faulty electrical box caused the fire, the storage facility "could" be held liable....but I think that would be between the insurance company that we have and the insurance company that they have. Of course, if one did not have insurance, then they can deal with them directly. I wish we didn't have to put it into storage...I think next time it will not be in covered storage.
DeleteWhen I first bought The Palms it was stored in a storage facility outside. I would have rather it was covered, but that was too expensive. As it turns out, I guess I'd opt for outside storage after seeing what happened to you guys. When will you be done with your claim and start looking for another rig?
ReplyDeleteYes, we thought the covered storage was the way to go too. The guy who owns it, according to a news report I read, is going to rebuild but put in sprinkler system, which is not required by code...and also put them in for the area that did not burn. He really ran a clean operation, it is just too bad that this tragic incident will probably be with him for a long time. Next year, I think we will use non-covered storage. And yes, we have been looking, going to Tampa Wednesday or Thursday to look at a couple that look promising. But until we see the money, or at least see it coming, we will just wait and try and be patient.
DeleteJust read two posts. I'm glad there wasn't foul play involved. That kind of thing can make one so skittish - foul play. it would be nice if they could identify the actual cause, but the results for you remain the same. I hope it will mean that you'll get a newer and better (if that's possible) rig SOON! Hugs.
ReplyDeleteDoubt we will find the quality and low miles of our last motorhome, but we find something comparable to that one after putting another 9,000 miles on it. This last one was a one owner, and after a little over a year after they bought it "her" son unexpectedly died. My assumption, due to the large number of kids toys in their yard as the Google Map car drove by getting "street view" pictures is that they had to help raise the grandkids while the motorhome sat out in the driveway. It only had 6,900 miles on it....15,500 after we had it for less than 10 months.
DeleteI pray that you receive the funds, soon. Blessings, Lynn
ReplyDeleteThank you Lynn, I hope you are feeling better after your surgery...hope this fixes many of your health issues that you have been fighting for so long now.
DeleteThank you, Dave. I've still got quite a bit of pain, stitches and staples, but am trusting God for complete healing. Blessings...
