Has it really been 6 weeks since my last post?

Time flies when you're having fun...and also when you're not...

Dad got out of rehab October 17th.  It was rough the first week or two, but he got stronger each and every day.  The independent living facility they are now in is wonderful.  They have helped so much AND there has been a true concern for their welfare.  So glad they moved into this place...

Mom and Dad

While at dad's urologist a few weeks ago we learned about a procedure he can have called suprapubic cystostomy or having a suprapubic catheter put in so he would not need to self-cath twice a day.  This procedure should cut down on his UTIs.  Since he has been home they have prescribed antibiodics twice already, mostly as a preventative treatment.   We hope this 15-30 minute procedure can be done in early December...it could have been done earlier except they want to do it in a hospital setting due to his age and his Atrial Fibrillation.

In the meantime...I have been getting a few things done.  First, the car needed front brakes.  Back in 2016 I had them done at a national place here in Sacramento...that didn't last long.  So for $160 I got 2 rotors and 2 sets of brake pads from NAPA Auto Parts, and all went well with doing the brakes (it had been years since I had done a brake job) until I needed to put the caliper, holding the new brake pads, back over the rotor.  Arny did that part, and one of those was even a struggle for him to do.

HHR Rotor and Brake Pads

Next, I replaced all four speakers, one in each door, and put in new window switches which were a bit difficult only because they were minutely larger than the ones I was replacing.  But Arny was able to grind down the areas that needed attention and all was well.

Window Switches and Speakers
The fan over the bed has not worked for a few years...yes the vent would open, but the fan did not work due to a rain sensor.  I found a replacement kit for $50 that would get rid of all the circuit boards which are known to fail, and still provide a temperature sensor so it can automatically come on or off depending on the temperature.  I also needed a new up/down switch for the bathroom.  Ordered all of this from Dyer's - RV and Trailer Parts and Accessories, which got them to me overnight even though I didn't need them that fast.  No problem doing that work.

Fan Upgrade and Bathroom Fan Switch

A few days ago I realized that the fridge needed defrosting, and that simple job turned out much harder when I discovered the drain line had busted allowing water to come onto the floor.  $5+ and now there is a new line, thanks again to Arny's smaller arms being able to reach the nipple coming out of the fridge.

There are a few more things I want to do to the motorhome before we leave in mid-December.  The big thing on our agenda is the annual Burdick Christmas Gathering on December 14th.

New Assisted Living Facility for Mom and Dad

At Sister's House, Citrus Heights, CA

The Terraces of Roseville

When we arrived in California back in May, Mom and Dad had already been looking at The Terraces Assisted Living Facility in Roseville.  The Brookdale Facility was ‘OK’, although there were a few issues that all of us were not very happy about.  And it was very unfortunate that when dad went into the hospital the last time, that when the emergency cord was pulled, no one showed up so Patti called 911 herself.  Amazingly the fire department showed up, hauled dad off to the hospital WITHOUT any staff member at Brookdale even knowing about it.  We never did get a good reason for that.  However, the MAIN REASON Mom and Dad decided to move was that it is closer to where Sandy and where Patti live.  For Patti it shortens her drive by nearly 5 miles, and Sandy by 2.5 miles.  That is a 33% reduction in travel for both of them, and due to the traffic congestion getting to Orangevale, it is even more of a time savings than that for both of them.  There are also a few other considerations that make this a better facility for Mom and Dad.  No one knew that on the day the move was to take place, Dad would be released from the Hospital.  No one said that life was going to easy, and Marcia and I did not arrive until the next day from Oregon so we were of no help whatsoever.

The Terraces

When you walk into the front door of The Terraces, you are greeted by this wonderful entryway.  There are chairs off to the right of the stairs, there is a welcome desk which always has someone there during normal hours (like 8-6), and the people…both staff and residents, have been very, very nice.

The Terraces

Above is a picture of the front left of the facility.  That wooden walkway leads up to a side door, which is locked, there is no key hole, but it leads very close to Mom and Dad’s apartment.  Although it is not good to arrive this way, it is good for exiting…so I typically park in a dirt area near here, enter through the front door, exit through this side door later.
The Terraces

At Brookdale they had a two bedroom apartment, and the kitchen was a bit larger.  The Terraces, as did Brookdale, provides three meals a day, and you can also get snacks if needed, so the small refrigerator, microwave, and limited cabinet space will be adequate for their needs.  The living room and the bedroom is larger, and there is a large walk in storage closet next to the bathroom, so the space meets their needs.  There is also a larger patio which overlooks Cirby Creek, and Mom loves to sit out there...I wish I had taken a picture of the patio.

The Terraces

Dad has been doing pretty good since he got out of the hospital 10 days ago.  On Sunday we had a BBQ at Arny and Sandy’s house, and Dad was able to handle the nearly 3 hours from when I picked them up to when I got them back.  Any type of move, especially at their age, is not easy…even when Patti and Sandy handled the majority of the move.  Heck, the only thing Arny and I moved into the apartment was this brown reclining love seat that Sandy found a few days ago...we both got hurt doing it.  Nothing major, let’s just say Arny’s fall was much harder than my fall, and my fall was much more entertaining, and thank goodness neither took place at The Terraces.

Huntley Park

Had we not came back to Sacramento early, today would have been the day that we left Huntley Park…instead we left 12 days ago.  Oh, I miss this view, one of my favorite views that I enjoyed every day.  I loved taking the camping chair out and just sit there watching.  If I was inside the motorhome at my chair, this is what I would see out my side window too.

Huntley Park

Even when the peace and quiet was momentarily disturbed by the Jet Boats going by…
Huntley Park

…the boats were offset by the abundance of birds and wildlife which I enjoyed watching…including this group of Snow Geese which showed up the day before we left.

And I certainly enjoyed watching the many Osprey, and the one Bald Eagle (pictures above are only of Osprey) which were constantly on the lookout for fish.

And when fish was caught, they flew off to their nest to share with the little ones.

And when fish was caught, they flew off to their nest to share with the little ones.

The Osprey seem to be EVERYWHERE along the Oregon Coast.  These two above lived near the Public Library, where I would go and download movies onto our Kindles a few times per week.  One of those times I took the camera and got these shots above.  I never did spot the nest, but I am sure it is nearby.

We try to be away from Florida during the summer and during Hurricane Season.  We have been watching Dorian for the past week.  Although we are thankful that it is not passing over Tampa as earlier paths showed a week ago, we are also thinking of those people in the Bahamas who lost everything.  We don’t know how many lost their lives, I am sure the number will be pretty big for such small islands, but we are thankful that the track will take it out to sea away from the large population along the east coast.  Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who are struggling through this.  We also realize that Hurricane Season still has two more months to go…we will be watching...

Leaving California, Headed for Home

At Sister’s House in Citrus Heights, CA

Trip Home from California to Florida

We entered California four months and 15 days ago for our yearly visit.  This year, besides visiting with family in the Sacramento area, we visited the Santa Cruz, Yosemite, Kings Canyon, Alabama Hills, Carson City, and Truckee areas, along with a six week trip up in the Northwest portion of California, and Southwest portion of Oregon.  We celebrated Dad’s 90th birthday, Mom’s 88th birthday, both of their 70th anniversary, and the marriage of my oldest son Michael to his lovely bride Anna.  Tomorrow morning we head out…at this time tomorrow we will be somewhere in Nevada along I-80 headed to the Salt Lake City area to visit with my daughter Stephanie.  It has been a wonderful 4 1/2 months here…despite the hot hot hot weather, and the fires which are a yearly occurrence here in the west.  The Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys have always filled with smoke…accounts of early settlers talk about smoke layers due to winter fires used to keep people warm to wildfires which broke out from what is believed to be lightning strikes.  As a kid, I remember the heavy smoke from the burning of the dry rice straw left over from harvest each year on the western side of the Sacramento River, a practice which is less common now days.  And I remember many large wildfires, some in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and lower foothills, which others were in Southern California or along the Coastal Ranges.  It is a part of living in the west.

Naked Ladies (Belladonna Lilies) in Sandy and Arny's backyard     Naked Ladies (Belladonna Lilies) in Sandy and Arny's backyard

Sacramento is a wonderful place for flowers.  It is the Camellia Capital of the World…just ask the Camellia Society of Sacramento.  They use to have a Camellia Festival in late February or early March--which ran from 1955 to 1993 which featured a debutante ball, princesses and a parade with flower-covered floats.  I think in 4th grade we had to make a Camellia Poster as part of a city-wide contest to help promote the event.  My posters were only good enough for the trash can…  I don’t know why they stopped the huge festivities…but they do still have a yearly Camellia Show, this year was the 94th year, still held by the Sacramento Camellia Society.  Not sure, but I think the parade probably stopped due to the Naked Ladies.  All I know is that the Naked Ladies appeared again yesterday, and we are headed out tomorrow!

Naked Ladies (Belladonna Lilies) in Sandy and Arny's backyard

Naked Ladies are also known as Belladonna Lilies…and they appear each year in Sandy and Arny’s backyard.  In the spring they appear as a green, leafy plant, which lasts for 4-8 weeks before they seem to die off.  Then in July or August a single stem starts to sprout upward…and lily opens up.  In the picture above, the short ones will be as tall as the lily that is open in just a few days.  The lilies will last for a few days, then die off.  It is an amazing show…  I am glad we were able to see a few of them bloom before we leave.

Bubba      Skruffy

These two fur kids are not going to be happy campers tomorrow…especially the one of the left.  Bubba (upper left) absolutely LOVES being at Sandy and Arny’s house.  Arny is Bubba’s best friend…and outside of our trip to Oregon for six weeks, and the three weeks we were sightseeing California, he has been here at their house for the past year.  However, we were here for all but three months of that time…this time we will be gone for 7 or 8 months…so Bubba is coming along with us.  Boy, he is going to be one depressed dog for a number of days…perhaps a couple of weeks…but he always adjusts to it.  We just hope that at 15 years of age, he has a few more visits back to see his buddy Uncle Arny, and also Aunt Sandy.  Skruffy, on the other hand, is fine as long as she is with me or with Marcia.  But she too LOVES Sandy and Arny’s house…the daily small treats of fried pork that I cook up and give them to hand out twice a day, the squirrels, the lawn, being in Sandy’s lap every now and then…she too will miss them.

Mom and Dad's 70th Anniversary back in June
Mom and Dad's 70th Anniversary back in June   Mom and Dad's 70th Anniversary back in June

For us it is a two-sided sword.  We have had some meals with mom and dad, including finding a great breakfast/lunch place called Annie’s right near to their Assisted Living facility.  We LOVE visiting family out here, we LOVE staying in Sandy and Arny’s backyard when we are here, we LOVE the sights we can explore getting here, short trips we take while here, and on the trip home.  We also LOVE our friends and family who don’t live here…and we miss our friends and family back home.  Next year my youngest son Ryan is graduating from Chiropractic School in the Kansas City area in April…and our plans will be to return to California sometime after that.  When, How Long we will stay is all up in the air for now.  But the Lord willing, we will return, and seeing family out here is always a wonderful thing.

Trip Home from California to Florida

Back to the map…this is our proposed route.  It will take us through Salt Lake to see Stephanie, through Kansas City to see Ryan, Aunt Vera and other relatives in the area, then down to Arkansas, and finally back to Florida.  I am not going to see my doctor until next March or early April since we pretty much will be going through Arkansas again on our way to Ryan’s graduation.  We decided to NOT go through the Chicago area, probably saving that for next spring.  Marcia’s driver’s license needs to be renewed in September, and they will require her to take a vision exam…otherwise we could do it over the Internet.  We want to take a bit of time going through the northern portion of Colorado, so we are not ready to set time periods for our Kansas City or Arkansas Visits as of now.

Home Away From Home with our Home

In Citrus Heights as Sister’s House

Arriving at my Sister's House

Arrived at my sister’s house at 2:20 pm.  Had a welcoming committee which surprised us…

Welcoming Committe when arriving at my Sister's House

That is my mom and dad, nearly 178 years of living between the two of them, and coming up on 70 years as a married couple, probably closer to 72 years of loving each other.  They arrived about an hour before we did, and waited outside for at least a half hour…thank goodness it was a mild afternoon with temps in the 70 range.  Arny made the sign, and they sat there waiting our arrival…and stood up as soon as we turned the corner to enter the cul-de-sac.

Bubba happy to see us, but...

Bubba waited patiently at the sliding glass door until we got the motorhome safely tucked away in the backyard…and then I let him out, and he went to see his mama.  Bubba is nearly 15 years old, and has been with Marcia for over 14 years.  He was happy, gave her some friendly wags as only Bubba does, sat up on the chair for some pictures by Marcia, and then out the door again to see if Skruffy was getting into his food and ‘his’ territory.  Yes, she went over and smelled it…thank goodness she went on to other smells and did not eat any of it.  It was quickly taken up from floor as Bubba will now be on Skruffy’s eating schedule again, along with what ever else he gets from Arny’s mother Euleda’s meals.  Yes, Bubba was happy to see us…but he is also feeling like that child who has been at Grandma’s house for a week (3 months in his case) and LOVED the freedom and attention and Love that he received.

Sister Sandy giving out afternoon treats

When sister Sandy got home from work at 4, the dogs get their afternoon treat.  Bubba gets dog treats, Skruffy get about an ounce of fried pork loin.  They look forward to their morning and afternoon treats…we wonder if Skruffy realizes how many treats Bubba got that she did not get while we were away for nearly 3 months.

L-R: Sandy, Euleda, Mom, Dad

As we waited for Arny to return from KFC with the chicken dinner, we all sat around and visited.  From left to right, that is Sandy (sister), Euleda, Mom and Dad…Marcia was sitting next to me.

New visitor in backyard....a duck

We were told that they have been having a regular visitor while we were gone….do you see it out there on the lawn?

New visitor in backyard....a duck   New visitor in backyard....a duck

Four wild ducks have been frequenting their backyard, and tonight one of the Mallards came to say hello to the new people with the loud dog…which scared it off when she came out to do her business after dinner around 7:30.  Now with Bubba, the ducks just played with him…one coming up to the sliding glass door and knocking on it with its beak until Bubba came to the door.  When outside, Bubba would chase it, it would fly to another part of the grass, and they would play like this for awhile.

Around 6 I took mom and dad back to the Independent Living Facility, came back and fed the dogs.  Wondered how Bubba would do since he has eaten when he wanted for the past 3 months…but he ate all his food faster than Skruffy ate her food.  Out they went (which is when Skruffy scared the Duck away), and back in after 10 minutes for the night.  Now Bubba has been getting up around 4:30 for the past 3 months…we will have to see how long it will take for that to change.  It is so nice to be at our home, away from home, in our home.  Motorhome life is just WONDERFUL!

Trip from Bakersfield to Citrus Heights

As for our trip today…we left at 8:15, got gas just north of Bakersfield, and continued up Highway 99 to the first rest area where we had breakfast.  Got up to Citrus Heights at 2:20 … a 6 hour trip, 141 hours from Florida to Northern California...WOW.  YOU KNOW why they call it Highway 99 don’t you?  Because you go about 9 miles down the road, and that last mile you hit about 99 pot holes, just to start over again…a few miles of good road, followed by a mile or two of REAL BAD roads, over and over and over again.  Sorry Nancy, but YOUR town gets the ribbon for THE WORSE portion of highway 99.  We honestly thought we were back up in the Yukon like we were two years ago…it was BAD BAD BAD.  Let’s hope the NEW GAS TAX that uncle Jerry Brown put in a few months ago will actually go to ROADS this time…but my guess is, it will go to fighting legal battles against a President who they just despise and hate so very much…and that is as political as my blog gets.  Honestly though, I truly don’t think Jerry’s father Pat is looking down from wherever he is and smiling at his son’s actions…but again, this is just my observation.

Heading Home, after Breakfast with my Children and Others

Near Harris Ranch, Coalinga, CA

Patti, Shelley, Michael, Ryan, Stephanie, Al, Dorothy, Marcia and Sandy

Had breakfast at a Mimi’s Restaurant in Sacramento with my children (Michael, Stephanie and Ryan), and invited their mother Shelley who was also in town (she too has remarried but he stayed back in Arkansas to work and take care of their kids, at least the two or three still living at home), and my sister’s Patti and Sandy, and of course, Mom, Dad and Marcia.  They put us in a back area which is not used until they are busy, and it was quiet, and we all enjoyed talking and visiting and eating.

Michael, Ryan and Stephanie
ALWAYS good to see the kids, which we do each year…but rarely together.  With Michael (far left and the oldest) living in Sacramento now, the others came to town for Christmas.  Ryan (in the middle and the youngest) drove out from Kansas City, visiting a number of National and State Parks along the way, including the Grand Canyon, Zion and Yosemite, just to name a few.  Stephanie (my only girl and the middle child) flew in from Salt Lake City.  Shelley (their mother and my first wife), flew in from Little Rock on Christmas day.  So NICE to see them together again…it has been a long time…Ryan’s graduation from the University of Arkansas, since my kids and first wife and I had been together.

Stephanie, Ryan, Michael, Dorothy and All

After we ate, I got this group shot of the kids with their Grandma and Grandpa.  From left to right, Stephanie, Ryan, Michael, Dorothy and Al.  Dad turns 90 next year, and it's also their 70 wedding anniversary too! Don’t know if all the kids will make the birthday and/or the anniversary…just so happy we got together over the Christmas time this year, and wish Anna (Michael's Fiance) didn't have to work so that she could have joined us!

San Joaquin Valley to Coast Range, from California Aqueduct Vista Point, I-5

Around 1:00 pm we were headed out from Sandy and Arny’s house.  First stop, Lodi’s Flying J for gas and especially for propane.  Had some horrific traffic in various areas…looks like a bunch of folks are headed somewhere the day after Christmas.  As we got past Tracy, but before we got to Andersons Soup Restaurant (great Pea Soup at Andersons, although we did not stop this time), there is the California Aqueduct Vista Point that overlooks the San Joaquin Valley to the east, and the coastal range mountains to the west.  Nearing sunset, I just had to stop at this vista…mistake which ended up good.  The mistake, only way to turn around, due to two large semi’s in the circle, was to unhook the car.  The good…well, the view was awesome.  Above is a panoramic of the east, to south, to west.

San Joaquin Valley, from California Aqueduct Vista Point, I-5

To the east (above) you can see the inversion layer over the valley.  It looks like mountain in the horizon, under that layer of pink…but it was really smog mix with a small bit of fog.

Sunset over the Coastal Range, from California Aqueduct Vista Point, I-5

To the west was the last of the sun…what a wonderful sunset it was.

Sunset over the Coastal Range, from California Aqueduct Vista Point, I-5

It had been a long time since we caught a sunset, and even the motorhome seemed to enjoy it.

Should have taken a picture of Bubba as I entered the house to say goodbye to the folks, who came over to my sister’s after breakfast, and Arny’s mother Euleda, AFTER I had backed the motorhome out of the backyard, and hooked up the car.  Bubba was right there looking at the empty RV pad…he saw me, turned around and headed for his chair.  He is going to LOVE staying at Sandy and Arny’s, no doubt about it.

Tonight we are staying in a large dirt lot, partially filled with trucks and few RVs, near the Harris Ranch Inn & Restaurant near Coalinga, CA…200 miles down, 2,800 miles to go.  Tomorrow, perhaps we will make Kingman Arizona, 425 miles away.

Let’s Have Lunch

Sister’s House -- Citrus Heights, CA

South chicken restaurant via Google Maps

Yesterday (Tuesday) I had lunch with my son Michael at a place called “South’s” at 11th and T streets in Sacramento.  Not fancy by any means, but the food was sure good.

California State Capital

Michael works in the State Capital as a staff member for a prominent committee for the State Assembly.  Although all (if not all, nearly all) state’s have a State Senate, some states have either a Assembly, General Assembly, State Assembly, House of Delegates, or House of Representatives…California has the State Assembly system.  Since the house and senate are essentially on break, although they still hold hearings and committee meetings during this time period, it is a slower time for Michael, and going out to lunch was an easy meet up.  Besides, he wanted to buy his dad lunch for my birthday which I had last week (see previous blog).  So I picked him up just before noon, and we headed to South Chicken Restaurant.  While still adhering to my low carb diet, I had the Fried Chicken Kale Salad and tried pulling off the crispy batter from the chicken the best I could.  I am not a huge fan of Kale, but I really liked this Kale Salad topped with herbed buttermilk dressing, toasted pistachios and goat cheese (also comes with onions which I passed on).  Michael had the fried chicken…which looked even better than my salad, although I don’t think I could have handled the cooked kale greens that came with it.  Only thing missing was his fiancé Anna who is also a state worker, but had a 1:00 meeting which she could not have missed.  They are getting married next year in July, so you can guess where we will be next year with dad turning 90, mom and dad celebrating their 70th anniversary, and son Michael getting married…and in between a few of these events, we will probably go to Yosemite (one of my favorite parks) and we plan to be in Southern Oregon for at least a month, probably 6 weeks.

Claim Jumper exterior via flickr

Claim Jumper interior via flickrToday (Wednesday) mom had a regular checkup with her primary doctor at 1 pm, so Marcia, Mom, Dad and I went to Claim Jumper in Roseville for lunch.  Claim Jumper is a Landry’s Restaurant, and I have a Landry’s card, and for my birthday they give a $25 birthday credit if you come in on your birthday month (or before the 15th of the next month).  We like Claim Jumper, although the price can be up there…but lunch is more reasonable.  Long time blog readers know that mom and dad use to live on the same cul-de-sac as my sister…where we stay with our motorhome when we visit the area.  There is only one house between where mom and dad lived, and Sandy Claim Jumper Chocolate Cake, via Yelpand Arny’s house…and the man of the house just happens to be a manager at Claim Jumper…and he worked today…and he had not seen mom and dad since they had to move.  Well, he made sure our orders were perfect…and they were…and he tossed in a free piece of birthday cake for me which I gave Arny and Sandy. YES, the picture to the left is what it looks like…it really is that big.  Marcia and I in previous years…before diet…would eat at Claim Jumper and purchase a dessert or two to bring back to Sandy and Arny which would feed the six of us (remember, mom and dad were still next door back then.)

In my next blog I plan to share pictures of Christmas lights around the neighborhood...Arny is still working on his, and some of the neighbors are already finished.  When you have a bunch of lights, the pain is making sure they all work.  Arny asked me to order a few tools which helped find the bad areas...and I will share pictures of that process with you all then too.

NOTE:  The only picture I took for this posting was the one of the Capital...all of the others came from the Internet, and are noted as such if you place the cursor over the picture.
