Skruffy Goes to the Vet

Home in Holiday / Tarpon Springs area, FL

Sign welcoming Skruffy (and others) to the Vet's office

Although it is a nice gesture, the sign welcoming Skruffy and other dogs for their appointments today outside the entry door was something I had not see before.  I think a large electronic sign, music blaring, would be a bit better…but we will take what we can get.

Dog Sign

Many veterinarian offices have all sorts of signs up on their walls.  This one caught my eye…sure glad Marcia wasn’t along because she might have some ideas to post it on the motorhome window.

Skruffy has been so good with her blood count numbers, despite a slight setback when her Hill’s Prescription WD and ID chicken stews were on recall and I had to use a different type of Hill’s Prescription…but I finally got some in from Chewy.com and now all is back to normal.  Only thing today was that this vet didn’t like the fact that I adjust Skruffy’s insulin without consulting them.  I do so when my tests are out of range…too low and I drop down a half a unit…too high and I increase by a half a unit.  Personally, I know my dog, I have read a lot about diabetes in dogs, and these adjustments are pretty basic, and keep her blood sugar in line.  “IF” I had diabetes, and was insulin, I would test myself, and I would give myself a shot accordingly.  Don’t see the difference, but this Vet did not like the fact that I was making decisions on my own.  Well…too bad.

We start our next trip in 13 days…will blog about that real soon.

  1. Seems like a pretty simple thing. Diabetics do it all the time. I guess he's just a control freak. :D

    1. Yes, the Vet seems to be a control freak...it is a two woman Vet practice, and when she asked "who told me I could make my own adjustments" I said, "well, the other vet in the office here knew what I was doing and told me to make 1 unit adjustments instead of 1/2 unit adjustment"....which shut her up pretty fast. However, I found that 1/2 unit adjustments are much better for Skruffy, so that is what I do unless her numbers go real far off as they did with the temporary change in food due to recall. BTW: recall was because they had too much Vitamin D in the food.

  2. Your right about controlling your own Insulin. He probably wants to charge you for every call. You might end up finding a new Vet.
Be Safe and Enjoy your upcoming Trip.

    It's about time.

  3. I have the same problem. I think they just want you to call them and make more appointments. I've been giving my animals all their shots and meds for 60 years. It's not like we don't know what we are doing! Like with Coop's back ... just give me the darn meds and I'll do it myself. So far not much luck in that department.

    1. You are close to Mexico...I would think you could get dog drugs down there. I know vet services are available in some border towns, but getting a sick dog across the border might be tricky.
