Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust

1a

There is nothing left….all gone, just dust and useless bits of steel.  The steering wheel in the picture is from the Class A which we were parked next to.  Both of us parked front in, rear facing out. There was nothing in front of me, I think there was a boat in front of my neighbor.

Our spot was that first one on the left.  You can see the total destruction of the entire building which I think had 20 parking places on each side, with probably 30-35 motorhomes, the rest being boats or antique cars.  Nothing survived…..

This is the other side….not any better.  All gone.  Amazingly, the RV’s on the side storage areas were not harmed….could not even see any blistering of paint, but I’ll bet it was so hot that each of those are going to need some work done to them, let alone the smoke damage that is surely inside each unit.

As I was taking the first photo above, I walked over to this view point…and this man and lady drive up and come up to the fence….and point.  “Did you have a unit in there?” I asked, “No, but we did last year, how about you?”  “Yes, I was in this first one on the left,” I said.  “That is where we were…” she mutters, “I am so sorry for you.”  I guess I muttered that we were headed to Alaska in just 33 days…”were”' being the operative word there.  And I got in the car and drove away….

    1. And I was doing pretty well until that lady told me that they had been in that same spot before us...oh my, that hit me in the gut pretty hard. It will be nice to have this all behind us, that is for sure. Thanks for your support.

  2. So sad for everyone who lost things precious to them. I suppose they can all be replaced although perhaps not for the antique car people. Sure changes my mind about storage facilities. I am so sorry for you two and the dashing of all your plans. I was looking forward to going to Alaska with you. We've always wanted to do that.

    1. Yes, some of the people had family pictures and treasures in their motorhome. We lost no clothing, no food outside of spices, but we had stocked up on paper goods from Sams (TP, paper towels, garbage bags, etc.) But the biggest loss is the loss of our trip this summer...but there is, hopefully, next summer. :)

  3. I can't imagine going to actually see the site. I am sure that was very overwhelming. So, so sorry.

    1. Yes, very hard...but not as hard as the loss of our summer, but we will salvage as much of the summer as we can and plan for Alaska for another time.

  4. Oh, Dave and Marcia,
I've been behind on reading and just found out about the fire and destruction. I am just so sorry for you. Please know I'm praying for you and all the others who lost their precious dreams. Have you heard from the adjustor yet? I only hope you can get all the yucky business stuff done so you can start to replace your loses - not that you can
EVER truly replace everything to your satisfaction. I'm so so sorry.

    1. Been working on the insurance stuff for past two days now. Have to get a new title since it went up in smoke. Should not have had the title in there, but since we bought it last year and then left for California fairly fast the title was forwarded to my sister's house and just remained with all the other paperwork. Just another thing to do and check off the list once finished. Hate lists like this....

  5. I've been traveling so much (and not reading blogs). Tonight I happened upon yours and the sad news. I'm so sorry for your loss, but on the good side no one was injured and I'm sure that your "new" plans will be even better!

    1. Thank you Cheryl, nice way to look at things. I know Marcia is enjoying "looking" for our future motorhome, but we have to handle all this insurance stuff first, what a pain this is....both the loss and the insurance work.

  6. I have not been on line for a few days and was shocked by your posts! What a nightmare! They say that things happen for a reason and hopefully this will be a blessing in disguise. I hope all goes well with the insurance.....have you started to look for a new rig yet?

    1. ..and sometimes you never know exactly what the reason is...we do feel blessed in that no one hurt, nothing that can't be replaced was lost. Yes, we have looked at a few, but until we have money in hand, no reason to go too far with it. That one was paid for, and we intend for our next one to be paid for...at least we are lucky in that respect.
