More Alaska Preparation

image
Today’s preparation involved a trip to the Bed, Bath and Beyond about 10 miles south of us in Port Richey.  Marcia has been considering a SodaStream machine for awhile now…after our recent trip to see her brother Dean, I knew it was a done deal since we both enjoyed drinking the soda water without any flavoring added.

Although we could have ordered over the Internet, there was a good reason to take the drive.  First time email and direct mail sign ups get a 20% discount on ONE ITEM in-store saving certificate.

Just go to their website and click on the “sign up and save” tab along the top.  So the soda maker we selected, which is normally $119, was on sale for $99.99, and ended up costing us $80.  This unit uses no batteries or power, just like we wanted…just a basic soda maker.

On top of that, there is a $20 manufacturer’s rebate which we will mail in, and this will lower the price to a mere $60.  So for $60 we get the machine, one CO2 cartridge, two reusable BPA free carbonating bottles, and a flavor sampler pack.  We also bought a spare CO2 cartridge since we never know when it will go empty, and where we will be when it does go empty.  The empty cartridge can be taken back to Bed, Bath and Beyond, Staples, and a whole lot of places listed below.

Now for the “WHY”.  We always drink bottled water, buying it in gallon containers for around 90 cents per gallon….sometimes less, sometimes more.  I don’t drink enough water.  Marcia, due to the MS, needs to drink lots of water.  This will help both of us.  As for flavors, I am sure sometimes we will use flavors.  Marcia is very interested in the Tonic flavor because many people with MS have said that Tonic Water has helped with their MS…although a few others have said they have had adverse affects.  Well, she has been drinking Tonic Water for a good month now, and it does seem to help her.  Unfortunately, the Tonic flavoring was not in the sampler pack AND it was the only flavor which they were out of at Bed, Bath and Beyond.

That's interesting about the tonic and MS.

    1. Something about the Quinine in the Tonic Water...I know that it is good for leg cramps too.

  2. Sounds like a good thing for you two. Bummer that they were out of the tonic. I have a friend with MS and had heard that "real" tonic was helpful.

    1. It took me a while, but I finally found an ingredients list and sure enough the Tonic Mix for SodaStream has Quinine in it...so we are hopeful it will be the same as the tonic water we buy in the store.

  3. Quinine sulfate is an interesting drug. I took it for years every night before swimming workouts in the morning (Masters Swimming for about 15 years). If I forgot to take it I'd for sure get leg cramps during workout. Glad to hear the SodaStream flavor packet actually has quinine in it. It's a valuable medication - pain reliever, muscle relaxer, anti-cramping, malaria (used to be) . . . You two are very organized in your preparations.

    1. Thanks Mary-Pat. Sorry to hear about you needing a new knee...hope it goes well and that you can travel before the four month estimate the doctor gave you.
