Azalea Campground, Kings Canyon NP

At Azalea Campground, Kings Canyon NP

Our Site, Azalea Campground

We left Mariposa Fairgrounds around 10 am, went to Madera for gas and Walmart, and then drove through Fresno and up highway 180 to Azalea Campground, in Kings Canyon National Park, and got setup.  By 4 pm, 7 pm Florida time, we were ready to watch Wednesday night church…just to find out that they had a sound problem…we could see, could not hear a thing, and we don’t read lips.  Oh well, saved a bit of aircard time.  (wink)

We picked the only ADA camping site in all of Azalea Campground…over 100 camping sites and only ONE ADA site, shame on you Kings Canyon National Park!  And the only thing I can see as to why this is an ADA site is because it is close to one of the restrooms…the pad is no wider or longer than others.  It is a bit more level…but even the leveling could use some help.  As for length…we just get the RV in and the HHR into the site…just barely.

We are without any hookups…there is water that we could fill our water tank if needed, but no dump station around that I know of…and no electricity, so out came the solar panel (picture one).  Of course, getting a lot of sunshine through these trees is going to be a task…perhaps 6 hours of good sun is my guess.  They do allow generators for just a few hours in the morning, and few at night.

Took a drive through the campground, and found it to be about 2/3 full.  Some site are deep, like the upper left picture, and most are very slanted, like the upper right picture.  It is the only campground open in this area, but others will be open by the 21st of May.  This is always a first come, first served campgrounds, while others do take reservations.  We will be here for 5 nights, cost a total of $45 with the senior pass for National Parks.

Sure are some pretty trees around here…somewhere in there is suppose to be the General Grant Tree…it is just 1/2 mile down the road.  We will probably have that, and other pictures of these giant Sequoias in our next blog.

  2. I'm curious how much help your solar panels are. If in full sun all day, does it keep your fridge running? Just lights? I've wondered if they would work for me in Quartzsite.

    1. Our fridge is propane and electric. We have two computers, aircraft, two kindles, our calculus toilet,, and on very cold nights, propane heater which uses electric for the fan unit. It is just past noon...I ran vehicle for 45 minutes this morn, on solar rest of the time and batteries are at 13.2 with solar on...would drop to 12.7 if I went off solar. It was at 12.45 when we got up this morning.
